Sam Chou

Sam Chou is an award-winning creator, director and filmmaker with over 16 years in the animation field. Born in Ottawa, Canada , Sam began his animation career at the early age of 10, creating stop-motion films with action-figures and his father’s Betamax Camera.

After graduating from Algonquin College in 1998, he began his “real” career as a traditional animator on feature films for Warner Bros, Sony, DreamWorks and Disney.

Sam moved into the fast-paced world of advertising, mentoring under world-renowned animator, Chuck Gammage. He directed dozens of animated commercials under the umbrella of Gammage, working with agencies such as Leo Burnett, Saatchi & Saatchi, and Doner. (see Sam’s commercial Direction)

In 2007, Sam founded Style5.TV a boutique animation studio specializing in quality 2D Animation for Film and Television. He wrote and directed the short film Maybe, which screened in numerous International Festivals including Hiroshima, Sao Paulo, New York, Chicago, Sydney and also toured the U.S in the Wild and Scenic Eco-Film Festival.

He co-created and directed the web-series ‘CRIME: The Animated Series’, premiering at Sundance, TIFF and winning Best Series for Adults at OIAF. He has won numerous awards as Director of Animation for the documentaries, ‘The Real Superhumans’ for The Discovery Channel and ‘Fly Colt Fly’ for The Movie Network.

Sam recently collaborated with the CBC, directing animation for an episode of David Suzuki’s ‘The Nature of Things’, which earned a 2016 Canadian Screen Award nomination. He is the director of the hit comedy series for Mondo “City in Crisis”, airing on Adult Swim Canada and co-creator and director of “The Wrong Block” web-series for Bite on Mondo.
